Cantor: I'll Vote for Brat

By    |   Tuesday, 17 June 2014 06:52 AM EDT

Outgoing Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor said he will "of course" vote for David Brat, the tea party insurgent who defeated him in Virginia's 7th Congressional District Republican primary, according to CNN.

Asked by Dana Bash on "State of the Union" on June 15 whether he would vote for Brat, Cantor replied: "Listen, I want a Republican to hold this seat. Of course. This is about making sure that we have a strong Republican majority in the House."

He added that he was hopeful the GOP would also take the Senate. Capturing both houses would provide "a real check and balance on the kinds of things that are making it so tough under the Obama economy."

Cantor's message was one of unity and reconciliation. "There are so many things that bind Republicans together than pull them apart," he told Bash. "Compare that to liberalism and those who believe that government is going to provide all the answers. There is enough of great difference between us as conservatives and the left for us to be focusing on that."

He said the country needs "a strong robust Republican Party" that espouses "the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, [and] a hand up, not a handout."

As for future plans and whether he would run for governor of Virginia, Cantor said that he and his wife would discuss such matters in greater detail soon. "I'm not ready to close out any options."
