Democratic consultant and longtime associate of the Clinton family, Paul Begala, has asked Bernie Sanders to stay in the race so he can change how it's run. According to his opinion piece on
CNN, Begala noted that the Democratic senator from Vermont has a chance to "re-define" the race.
The Democratic strategist has worked for the Clinton family for years. He served as a consultant for Bill Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992, and assisted Clinton during his time in the White House. Currently, he is a consultant with Priorities USA, a pro-Hilary Clinton super PAC.
According to his op-ed, during Begala's time with the Clintons, he also worked with Sanders and cites their shared history in politics.
Begala added that now is the time for Sanders to turn his attention to Donald Trump, not Hillary.
"Will you use your campaign to show Donald Trump how to attack Hillary — or to show Hillary how to attack Donald Trump?" Begala asked Sanders.
The Democratic consultant explained that if Sanders continues to attack Clinton, she will be faced with an attack on two fronts, from both Sanders and Trump.
While Sanders will attack her with "friendly fire," Begala said Trump would use "chemical weapons," apparently meaning that Trump's harsh rhetoric would be worse than Sanders' criticisms.
Sanders should therefore focus on "issues, not insults" with Clinton, because Trump is a "tailor-made villain," someone who was born wealthy but pretends to be a populist, said Begala.
Begala noted that Sanders' cause of economic justice has had no bigger enemy than Trump, referencing Trump's plan to cut taxes on the wealthy and belief that wages are too high.
The Democratic consultant mentioned that Clinton has won more votes, but Sanders has a chance to help Clinton take on the Republican candidate, to "show the world — including Hillary — how to dismantle Trump."
Trump has said he believes Sanders' supporters have "a lot of crossover" with Trump, according to a report in
The Hill.
Sanders' wife Jane Sanders, in the Hill report, said "I tend not to agree with that."
