Rep. Adam Kinzinger: Voter Fraud Claim Undermines Election, Constitution

Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Friday called for proof about President Donald Trump's claims of massive voter fraud.

"This basically undermines the idea of an election, undermines the Constitution," Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican told CNN's "New Day" program.

Some people, both Republicans and Democrats, take statements as fact based on who presented the statement to them, and that is not helpful in this situation, Kinzinger continued, and "when you just attack it and say, 'I'll show you proof eventually,' or you say, 'Just trust me on this one,' you get some people that believe it, because you have confirmation bias either way."

"At the end of the day, you have to show proof of that, you have to show why you're undermining the Constitution of the United States," the congressman told host Chris Cuomo.

When asked how he felt about Trump's belief in the voter fraud, Kinzinger said "It's disappointing to me."

Truth is key in any argument, Kinzinger said.

"Whether you're on the left or the right or the middle, we need to accept facts as facts. Whether it's facts that don't agree with my side of the argument and whether there's facts that do, when you start saying facts are only facts if they are something I agree with, that's when it gets really dangerous."

Before Kinzinger appeared on "New Day," Cuomo interviewed VoteStand founder Gregg Phillips, who said he had proof of the voter fraud, but said he would not be able to share it for "another few months."

Also Friday, Trump sent out a tweet that said he was looking forward to seeing the results of Phillips' study.
