President Donald Trump picked the most conservative Cabinet in modern history — surpassing the team handpicked by former President Ronald Reagan, the American Conservative Union says.
ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp tells the Washington Examiner the Trump Cabinet has a 91.52 conservative rating, which exceeds Reagan's Cabinet rating of 63.43.
President George H.W. Bush's Cabinet came the closest to Trump's with a conservative rating of 78.15.
"By our ranking of the members of Congress in the Cabinet, this is the most conservative Cabinet of any Republican including Reagan," Schlapp tells the website.
The ratings are based on the average of the grades given to the lawmakers in the Cabinet, according to the Examiner. Five of Trump's 21 picks were in Congress.
By comparison, Barack Obama's Cabinet, with nine one-time members of Congress, received a 23.96 conservative rating from the group.
CIA Director Mike Pompeo received a rating of 96.8 — the highest conservative rating of Trump's picks. He was followed closely by Rep. Tom Price of Georgia, the nominee to head Health and Human Services, who received a 96 lifetime rating.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told The New York Times he is satisfied Trump is following a conservative agenda.
"If you look at the decisions that are being made, they are solid — from our perspective — right-of-center things that we would have hoped a new Republican president would have done," he told the newspaper.
