The rollout of the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, shows the law has "completely failed," U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers said Tuesday.
"It's just flawed. And now we're asking Americans to buy healthcare coverage, and the premiums are outrageous," Ellmers, R-N.C., told CNN's "Newsroom."
Ellmers' constituents have told her they are losing their current health insurance coverage because of Obamacare, and some are seeing new coverage costing up to 400 percent more.
Calling Obamacare "dead on arrival," Ellmers proposed replacing it with a "system in place that really will work," such as the American Health Care Reform Act.
"I support the Health Care Reform Act that I worked on to put forward a plan of affordable healthcare coverage for Americans. Not . . . go with a system that's broken right from the start," Ellmers said.
The American Health Care Reform Act is a Republican alternative to Obamacare
that emphasizes a free-market approach to address problems in the nation's healthcare system.
Ellmers is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which will hold hearings on problems with Obamacare's launch.
She said the administration, including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, had assured committee members Obamacare was on schedule.
"We have had subcommittee hearing after subcommittee hearing, and each one of those agencies has, including Kathleen Sebelius, told us we were right on track.
"This is a failure at the greatest level, and should be a great embarrassment to the president and his administration. And, someone needs to take responsibility for it," Ellmers said.
