Divorce in America is a hellish ordeal that destroys the morale and the bank accounts of couples, according to Dr. Drew Pinsky, former star of "Celebrity Rehab," and host of the new documentary, "Divorce Corp."
"Slippery slope is not a vivid enough image to describe the hill you roll down and the hell you roll into. It is a world that is devoid of constitutional rights," Pinsky told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
Story continues below video.
"It's a world where only the participants – meaning the attorneys and the evaluators and the judges – benefit, and often people, whatever it is they're trying to divide up, end up with a negative number attached to it just because of the burden of divorce."
Pinsky says divorce has become "an industry — and it's an industry that's sort of shadowy.
"It exists in and unto itself and it's separate from the usual legal privileges we all enjoy. Horrible things can happen … you can't imagine how bad they get."
Pinsky says his documentary, which opens on Jan. 10th, also looks at countries where divorce is more humane.
"Scandinavia, Sweden magically don't have this problem . . . because they don't have this system attached to it, this self-serving system," he said.
Pinsky also weighed in on the A&E cable network's suspension of Phil Robertson, star of the smash reality series "Duck Dynasty" for an interview in the January issue of GQ.
Robertson blasts homosexuality as a sin and compared it with bestiality.
"He's not spewing hate, he's spewing ignorance, frankly, and so he's entitled to his opinion," He said.
"It's a very strange thing for him to say. It's almost comical, which is what we look to those guys for. However . . . we've become quite aggressive with our attacks on free speech, and that concerns me."
