Tom DeLay: Health Insurance Costs Killing Healthcare Market

(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

Health insurance itself is driving up healthcare costs across the board and something needs to be done about it, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV.

DeLay appeared on "Newsmax Now" and told host Bill Tucker the industry needs an overhaul from top to bottom.

"Insurance is driving up the healthcare cost by trillions of dollars," DeLay said. "For instance, do you know in the healthcare industry, health insurance industries, there are 600,000 employees that do nothing all day long but sit by a phone and tell you no, they're not going to pay for that?

"That's a trillion dollars a year that health insurance is spending or charging you for and none of it goes to healthcare. The opposite is also true. It's almost that many employees in the healthcare industry that sit by a phone begging the insurance companies to pay and that's almost a trillion dollars. You're talking about $2 trillion a year that goes into health insurance industry that has nothing to do with healthcare. You could start right there."

DeLay said part of the solution is to create more competition to mainstream health insurance options, such as health savings accounts, ministry sharing group plans, and what he calls partnerships.

"People could come together in a sort of like a credit union where you put your own money or your company puts the amount they're paying to healthcare into your account and everybody shares the cost of you having a catastrophic event and you pay for your healthcare out of that account," DeLay said. "No insurance whatsoever.

"It's called a healthcare partnership, where people come together and help each other. Now it has to be nationwide so it can be big enough, so they can all set costs, but you do not need health insurance. What we need is a healthcare market."

Republican leaders were dealt a blow Monday night when Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, announced she will not vote for the party's latest healthcare bill that would repeal and replace the current Obamacare law.
