Indiana Gov. Mike Pence won his debate against rival vice presidential Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine – and "set the table for what Donald Trump needs to do" in his matchup with Hillary Clinton, pollster John Zogby told Newsmax TV.

Kaine "came out way too hot . . . kind of onions and arrogant," Zogby, Newsmax contributor, senior partner at John Zogby Strategies, and author of "We Are Many, We Are One," said on Wednesday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"Mike Pence won the debate and in a way kind of set the table for what Donald Trump needs to do on Sunday – which is to get back on message, ignore what he doesn't need to talk about or dismiss what he doesn't want to talk about, and not get back on the offensive against Hillary, but start giving a rationale why people should vote for him."

Zogby argued the debate Tuesday night might have been as "consequential" as the 2000 face-off of VP candidates Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman.

"There were questions about whether or not George W. Bush . . . had enough gravitas and Cheney came out there, and I think was calming and assuring and experienced," Zogby said. "I think that Dick Cheney really could've provided the difference . . . It moved the needle 1/10th of a percent. That was enough."

The race is still "very close," Zogby said.

"If he's just Trump [in the Sunday debate], it could be bad," he said. "He has to give people a positive reason for voting for him."
