Hoekstra on NKorea: 'It's a Very Unsettling Time Right Now'

("J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV")

By    |   Wednesday, 06 Sep 2017 02:56 PM

Pete Hoekstra on Wednesday told Newsmax TV that accepting North Korea as a nuclear state is "very much an unacceptable solution" and the United States, along with Russia and China, are "walking a fine line."

On the flip side, the former congressman and President Donald Trump's pick to become the ambassador to the Netherlands is not advocating for a full invasion of the rogue nation.

"The path forward is very unclear," Hoekstra told host J.D. Hayworth, but any notion of accepting North Korea as a nuclear nation is quite clear — no way.

"I think for the United States, for South Korea, and Japan, that's very much an unacceptable solution," Hoekstra said. "And remember, not only do they have nukes now . . . (but) we need to just accept that North Korea will continue to enhance its capabilities, its megaton delivery, the accuracy of its delivery systems, and the range? I think that's totally unacceptable."

Hoekstra says the United States need to lean on Russia and China to help deal with North Korea, and the three countries had better quit sparring with each other and keep their collective eyes on the big picture.

"We're all walking a fine line here," Hoekstra told Hayworth. "How far do all three of us want North Korea to go with their capabilities? And so it's very much a tightrope that we're walking.

"All three of us are . . . hoping that none of us make a misstep, but more importantly that North Korea doesn't make a misstep or a miscalculation where things would spiral out of control," Hoekstra said. "It's a very unsettling time right now."

Plus, Hoekstra said the United States being distracted by North Korea is not such a bad thing for Russia and China.

"I think absolutely the Russians and the Chinese are looking for leverage," Hoekstra told Hayworth.

"China over the last number of years has made significant progress in its influence over the South China Sea. So, the more that they mess with the United States through North Korea, the less capability we have to stand up to what they're trying to do in the South China Sea," Hoekstra said.

"The Russians, clearly with Ukraine and other aspirations throughout the Middle East and Europe, you know they don't mind us being tied up with North Korea," Hoekstra said.
