Americans know "something is wrong" with U.S. leadership in the world, but aren't getting "common sense solutions" from Washington, former Michigan congressman-turned-radio host Mike Rogers tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview with "The Hard Line" host Ed Berliner, Rogers – whose "Something to Think About" show on Westwood One has reached over 150 stations since its debut seven months ago – says his listeners are eager to hear people "talking about … complicated problems."

For example, the former chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence says he tries to "take those complicated national security issues and put them in terms that I can understand and my listeners can understand," but he also tackles "human interest stories."

"They're ready for, that part of America that we have all lost touched with and clearly the political class in Washington D.C. has lost touched with," he said.

"They want real problems solved, they understand that when they turn on the TV that something is wrong in the world and something is wrong with U.S. leadership in the world. I try to bridge that gap for them in a way that they can walk away and have a better understanding and then be better advocates when they're talking about this with their friends… with their members of Congress."

Rogers says he also wants to make sure "we don't forget about the kinds of things that make our communities great, make our country great."

"[S]ometimes with all of that negativity and all of that pablum, that dispute around the country and politics, that gets lost," he said. "I'm trying to refocus on some of those issues."

And he wants to do it without "insulting anybody."

"I never thought that [insults] worked, but I can do it in a way rather than an insult, maybe a bit of a sense of humor or put it in very plain terms as to why what they're saying is just so far off the mark," he said. "When I say that I'm talking about politicians in Washington D.C. or presidential candidates, I try to put it in a way that you can go 'yeah, I haven't thought of it that way.'

In a separate interview with "Newsmax Now" host Ric Blackwell, Rogers says one of his most successful stories was about race relations.

"In that story, it was never 'we vs them'," he said. "It was always about a group of people sharing each other's special cultural difference in a positive way. … People related to the message. It was simple but it had a big impact."
