Mulvaney: Graham-Cassidy 'Not Perfect,' But Beats Obamacare

(Newsmax TV's "The Howie Carr Show")

White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told Newsmax TV on Wednesday the latest healthcare bill is not perfect, but it is better than the current Obamacare law that seems to be imploding.

Mulvaney appeared on "The Howie Carr Show" and addressed the long-running healthcare debate.

"I'm a voter; I have senators now, I'm no longer an elected member of Congress," said Mulvaney, a former Republican representative from South Carolina. "I have a member of Congress, and I have two senators, and what they promised me when they ran was that they would get rid of Obamacare, and I want them to deliver on that promise, and I'm extraordinarily frustrated that has not happened.

"I get the fact that this bill may not be the perfect bill that they would write if they didn't have to work it in a legislative system, but you didn't promise me you were going to pass the perfect piece of legislation. You promised me you were going to get rid of Obamacare, and I want that promise to be kept."

A proposal put forth by Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., would provide money to the states, which would then build their own healthcare platforms based on their individual needs. It is currently a few votes short of having enough support to pass in the Senate via a simple majority, which would need to be accomplished before a Sept. 30 deadline.

Mulvaney said the effort to drum up support for the bill likely will not include any Democrats.

"I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any Democrat who wants to go on record as voting to get rid of Obamacare . . . they vote against this and their entire Democrat base leaves them because they love Obamacare because of who provided it," Mulvaney said.

"Even if they're suffering under it, they still love it, because it's got that name attached to it. It's very hard for a Democrat to vote against them."
