Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., an Orthodox Jew who has been actively involved in global Jewish affairs for decades, told Newsmax TV he is thrilled President Donald Trump has recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and is moving the American Embassy there.
"I really appreciate that President Trump made this decision," Lieberman, a onetime Democrat turned Independent, told host Bill Tucker and Nan Hayworth on Monday's "Newsmax Now." "Truth is, it should have been done 22 years ago."

He was referring to the House and Senate approval of the Jerusalem Embassy Relocation Act in October 1995, which OK'd the moving of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but was never acted upon, in part, because of fear it would roil the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
And immediately after Trump's action, Palestinian officials condemned it, saying it could lead to calls for holy wars by extremist groups, as well as erode the role of the United States in the peace process.
But Lieberman, one of the cosponsors of the 1995 bill, said for years, Israel, "one of our closest allies in the world, [ended] up being the only country in the world where we don't put our embassy in the city they call their capital.
"What the president has said is, and this is very important to the people of Israel and probably to the Jewish people and a lot of people who believe in the Bible, that Jerusalem is going to remain the center of this Jewish state, the capital of this Jewish state.
"Yes, there may be a part out here that's Palestinian, obviously of all people of all religions will be welcomed, so I thought it took guts for President Trump, but he did the right thing."
