Gordon Chang to Newsmax: Trump's TikTok Delay Call a Concern

By    |   Saturday, 28 December 2024 04:10 PM EST

China expert and author Gordon Chang said Saturday on Newsmax that he is concerned that President-elect Donald Trump has gone to bat to delay a potential ban on TikTok pending a "political resolution" under his administration.

"I hope that that's not a pattern, but we've got to be concerned," Chang told Newsmax's "Saturday Report." "TikTok has violated every pledge it has made to protect the data of Americans, and we know that it's been engaged in illegal conduct, especially with minors' information."

Trump's request Friday came while TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court. The social media video company argued that the Supreme Court should strike down a law that could lead to a U.S. ban on the platform by Jan. 19, just before Trump takes office.

The government, though, says the law is necessary to eliminate a national security risk from TikTok and its ownership.

Chang stressed, though, that China "uses TikTok to propagate its narratives," including on Ukraine, Hamas, and more.

"This is also just a question of reciprocity, even if it was not involved in bad conduct," Chang said. "China uses TikTok to propagate its narratives, whether it's Ukraine or Hamas or whatever.

"So clearly, this is just also a question of reciprocity, even if it was not involved in bad conduct. No American app is in China. So why are we allowing these Chinese apps in our country? This is, you know, reciprocity should be a foundation of America first."
