Nearly 75 percent of the population in Venezuela has lost an average of 19 pounds over the past year because of a lack of food in the midst of the nation's crippling financial crisis, Fox News reported.

The alarming 2016 Living Conditions Survey, known as Encovi in Spanish, of 6,500 families also found as many as 32.5 percent eat only once or twice a day, a striking increase from the 11.3 percent from a year ago, Fox News reported.

A drop in global oil prices and the worst inflation rate in the world – close to 700 percent last year – has crippled the once-wealthy oil producing nation headed by Nicolás Maduro, who came to power following the death of socialist leader Hugo Chávez in 2013.

The lack of food is sardonically known as "The Maduro Diet," Fox News reported.
According to Fox News, the survey also found:

  • 82 percent of the nation's households live in poverty.
  • 93.3 percent of the respondents told researchers their income wasn't enough to cover the needed food.
  • Venezuelans are replacing red and white meat with cheaper vegetables and tubers, mostly potatoes.
  • 65 percent of respondents admit to having children at home who'd skipped school for food-related reasons — including filling in for their parents in long food lines.
