President Donald Trump's nominee to serve as U.S. ambassador to the European Union is calling for a Muslim cleric accused of organizing a failed coup in Turkey to be extradited from the U.S. back to Turkey.

According to The Daily Caller,  Theodore Roosevelt Malloch told Turkish media he would like to see Fethullah Gülen face justice if a crime occurred.

"It does seem remarkable to me that as the result of the coup attempt . . . that the United States would not, in due process and with judicial review in a fair hearing, make an extradition of Fethullah Gülen back to Turkey so that he can be held in a trial setting," Malloch said.

"That seems to me something that this administration should take very seriously. I think that was dismissed in the Obama period."

The 75-year-old Gülen is a former imam and founded the Gülen movement. He has lived in Saylorsburg, Pa., since 1999.

Malloch is a professor and strategic consultant based in the United Kingdom. He said the U.S. should respect Turkey as its an ally and extradite Gülen.

"Turkey is an important strategic relationship for the United States," he said.

Some accused Gülen of orchestrating the coup attempt in Turkey last summer that left more than 300 people dead. More than 8,000 arrests were made after the July 15-16 incident. Gülen is also thought to have played a role in a 2013 corruption scandal in Turkey.

The Turkish government would like Glen to return to Turkey for questioning  in regards to the coup attempt.
