An Atlanta radio host who told listeners he'd interviewed Donald Trump this week admits he repackaged an old interview to make it seem brand-new – and reportedly has been suspended from the air.

News Radio 106.7 morning radio host Steve McCoy declared to listeners on Tuesday the "kind of fluffy" 3-minute interview occurred the day before – and that as a precondition, was told by Trump's campaign handlers he couldn't talk about the GOP presidential front-runner's platform or policies.

The interview was posted by BuzzFeed News, which broke the story of its initial airing, and then the fallout from revelations that Trump's remarks were a mashup from an interview that took place before the real estate billionaire announced his presidential campaign.

BuzzFeed reports a Trump campaign lawyer also said McCoy had admitted he'd merely repurposed an old interview.

According to BuzzFeed, McCoy claims he recycled the piece, but that he never said it was new. Yet the news outlet notes at the end of the fake-new interview, McCoy signs off  by saying: "There's Donald Trump from yesterday our conversation with him."

McCoy claims the interview was scheduled, "but it didn't come through so I used an old interview."

"I got suspended and I'm taking my punishment," he tells BuzzFeed News.

BuzzFeed also reprinted a tweet from McCoy's Twitter feed on Thursday, which has since been deleted, saying he recorded the interview for another station.

Trump's campaign lawyer, Donald McGahn, tells the news outlet McCoy allegedly admitted the interview took place a year ago.

"This interview did not take place," a furious Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in a statement to BuzzFeed News.

"It is a fraud and/or a spoof. The Trump campaign has never communicated with this man. He said Mr. Trump spoke to him yesterday prior to the debate, Mr. Trump never spoke to him yesterday or any day before that. The radio host admitted it was a fraud to our attorney, apologized and he is now hiding and not returning anyone's call. This is a
representative of the dishonesty Mr. Trump faces from the media."

The station has yanked the interview off Soundcloud, but both BuzzFeed News and the Atlanta Journal Constitution have captured the piece and posted it.

Atlanta Constitution Journal reporter Rodney Ho reports McCoy wasn't on the air Thursday morning.

He also reports program director Greg Tantum said the station is "investigating" the matter.
