A socialist group that wants the minimum wage raised to $20 an hour is hiring — at $13 an hour.
The Seattle-based Freedom Socialist Party posted an ad on Craigslist.com
seeking a Web content manager.
"Part-time position for socialist website at a Seattle progressive, non-profit organization (Work site located in the U-District)," the ad reads.
"We are looking for someone to fill the shoes of a graphic designer / web content manager. Your daily tasks will be divided between graphic design such as creating flyers and leaflets, and posting content to the site such as events, articles and statements. Good position that allows flexibility for a student or someone seeking part-time work.
"We are a socialist feminist political party, so interest in the fights for women's/LGBTQI/people of color/immigrant rights, as well as other pressing social issues, is encouraged."
A list of duties and qualifications follows, and at the bottom is a line that says the job will be 20 hours per week. Underneath that is the compensation: "$13.00/hr or DOE."
which uncovered the job ads, pointed to a page on
the Freedom Socialist Party's website that outlined the group's platform for the 2012 presidential election.
"Stephen Durham for President … Christina López for Vice President," two headlines on the page read. Under a section titled "Government that helps the needy, not the greedy," the group calls out the minimum wage:
"Restore funds and programs that aid seniors, the poor, children, single mothers and the homeless. No cuts to Social Security, Medicaid or Medicare. Raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour. Provide a guaranteed annual income. Free medical care for all, including reproductive services and abortion. End foreclosures and expand low-cost public housing."
The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, although some states and cities have set higher limits. Democrats, including President Barack Obama, have been trying to pass a bill that would increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. The Congressional Budget Office said earlier this year
the wage hike could ultimately cost the country one million jobs by 2016.
