Sen. Schumer: GOP 'Learned Lesson' on Debt Ceiling

Sen. Schumer: GOP 'Learned Lesson' on Debt Ceiling

By    |   Sunday, 22 December 2013 01:19 PM EST

Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York says Republicans won't fight a raise in the debt ceiling next year because they have "learned their lesson" after October's partial government shutdown.

Republicans "will back off any hostage taking" or what Schumer termed "extremist" demands when debt ceiling talks resume after the first of the year, the senator said Sunday on "Meet the Press."

Republicans took a political hit when members of the tea party faction refused in late September to agree to a budget deal, shutting down the government.

Schumer said he expects to see "saber rattling" by House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "But at the end of the day the president is going to hold firm," and won't negotiate.
