New York Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer called on Nikki Haley to support "loyal and strategic" U.S. ally Israel if she gains confirmation to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to the Washington Examiner.
Schumer, who will be the Senate minority leader, issued a statement urging Haley, the Republican governor of South Carolina, to be sure to keep support for Israel as a top priority.
"Aside from representing the United States and pursuing our strategic goals at the United Nations, one of the most important jobs the U.N. ambassador has is to stick up for one of America's most trusted and loyal and strategic allies—Israel… I hope that Governor Haley shares that view, and look forward to hearing from her on this issue, and many others, as she seeks confirmation by the Senate," Schumer said in his statement, according to The Examiner.
President-elect Donald Trump announced Haley as his pick for the post on Wednesday. She still must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, which has a Republican majority, the Examiner reported.
Haaretz looked at Haley's views on Israel, and pointed out that she has opposed the nuclear deal with Iran. The Israeli paper noted that in the Republican Party's official response to President Barack Obama's 2014 State of the Union, she said if Republicans win the White House, "we would make international agreements that were celebrated in Israel and protested in Iran, not the other way around."
The Examiner reported that Delaware Democrat Sen. Chris Coons called on Haley to give Trump her "unvarnished opinion" in her ambassador role, reminding that she criticized the president-elect for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich credited Trump's choice of Haley, saying he believed she would be "very effective."
