Actor Patrick Stewart announced Thursday that he's applying to be an American citizen so he can actively oppose President Donald Trump.
In an appearance on ABC's "The View" to promote the film "Logan," Stewart explained a Feb. 10 tweet in which he said he'd had the "worst sleep of my life" in Washington, D.C.
"It was a fairly innocent tweet," he said. "I did not directly insult your president."
Stewart said he and his wife, Sunny, were visiting with friends in the nation's capitol, and spoke about the president, asking the friends "What can we do?"
He then told the co-hosts, "I'm not a citizen, however, there is — maybe it's the only good result of this election — I am now applying for citizenship because I want to be an American, too," he said.
"Because all of my friends in Washington said there is one thing you can do: Fight, fight. Oppose, oppose. But I can't do it [yet] because I'm not a citizen."
