An Islamic group with terrorist ties joined Occupy Wall Street protesters Friday in New York City’s Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan.
About 60 members from the Council on American-Islamic Relations – New York held a prayer service amid the anti-banking demonstration, with the prayer leader calling out, “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is the most powerful of all”) and the female members wearing head coverings and sitting behind the men.
The group is an offshoot of the Washington, D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin accused of having terror ties, and whose past and current employees have been jailed and sent packing out of the United States for terror activities, the Daily Caller reported.
The group’s association with the protests could spur more accusations of anti-Semitism that have been lobbed against the movement. The Anti-Defamation League last week condemned some protestors for the content of their signs and speech.
“While we believe that these expressions are not representative of the larger views of the OWS movement, it is still critical for organizers, participants, and supporters of these rallies to condemn such bigoted statements clearly and forcefully,” the group said in a statement.
