New Website Tracks Obamacare Insurance Plans and Abortion

By    |   Friday, 21 Nov 2014 10:29 PM

Angered by what they term a lack of "transparency" about abortion coverage and Obamacare, two pro-life organizations are urging the public to consult a new website for accurate information about which health plans cover abortion.

The website, called ObamacareAbortion.com, is a joint project of the Family Research Council and the Charlotte Lozier Institute. It says it will tell consumers which plans do not cover abortion and which ones are "unknown" as far as abortion coverage is concerned.

Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey praised the initiative, saying the Obama administration’s handling of the abortion issue in Obamacare has been "unconscionable." He said the website should be helpful to consumers who do not wish to pay for other people’s abortions.

Health and Human Services officials told The Washington Times that "nothing has changed" as far as federal law is concerned. It states that "no federal funds, including administrative funds, are permitted to cover abortions or administer plans that cover abortions, except in the case of rape, incest, or when the life of the woman is endangered."

Regarding abortion coverage, the official said issuers must collect "separate payments from consumers with health insurance plans that cover abortion services for which the use of federal funds are prohibited. It does not specify a method that issuers must use to comply with the separate payment requirement."

But according to a Government Accountability Office report released in September, the provisions cited by HHS have proven to be essentially meaningless. The GAO found that insurance companies are not collecting separate payments and that the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been telling insurers they do not need to do so.

Pro-life groups say it is often difficult to pry useful information out of health insurers as to whether they cover abortion and that consumers have been left in the dark. Arina Grossu, director of the Family Research Council’s Center for Human Dignity, said some health insurers in Rhode Island and Texas won’t speak clearly when asked about their coverage of elective abortions.

At a press conference Thursday, pro-life groups urged passage of legislation which would require insurance companies to "prominently display" their coverage of such abortions, The Times reported.
