Critics: Obama’s Comments on AG’s Good Looks Backfire

By    |   Thursday, 04 April 2013 09:49 PM EDT

President Barack Obama knows a good-looking attorney general when he sees one — but some think that his noting it publicly was not so gentlemanly.

Obama sparked criticism when he spoke about California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris at a suburban San Francisco fundraiser Wednesday night.

“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake,” Obama said of Harris. He then added, “She also happens to be, by far, the best-looking attorney general in the country.”

“Obama’s comment about Kamala Harris is disgraceful and really terrible for workplace equality,” tweeted Jonathan Chait of New York magazine.

“Give @BarackObama a break, everyone in CA is pretty,” tweeted David M. Drucker, senior editor at Roll Call.

“Does merely stating the obvious make the president sexist?” Robin Abcarian wrote in The Los Angeles Times. “More wolfish than sexist, I’d say.”

Obama’s White House has been considered a boys’ club since his first term. Many of his political hires are men he has long been friends with, The Washington Post said.

But he reportedly took seriously the criticism that his West Wing had an overly macho feel.

In 2008, Obama referred to a female reporter as “sweetie,” drawing fire. He apologized for that remark.

The attorney general herself didn’t get into the fray – at least on social media. The last post on her Facebook page Thursday night was from Monday. It was a picture and quote from Cesar Chavez, a day after his birthday. Her latest tweet was from earlier Wednesday and dealt with gun control.

And while some people were angered by the comments and some shook them off as no big deal, a few people found humor in the situation.

Slate political reporter and MSNBC contributor Dave Weigel got in a presumably good-natured dig at the Delaware attorney general when he marked his otherwise neutral tweet, “cc Beau Biden.”
