North Korea's nuclear arsenal and other weapons "are only aimed at the United States," the country's head of the delegation to talks with South Korea said Tuesday.

"Regarding nuclear issues, our strategic weapons, atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs on intercontinental missiles are only aimed at the United States, not our brethren, China or Russia," said Ri Son Gwon, head of North Korea's delegation at the first talks with Seoul in more than two years.

The comments came up after Pyongyang announced it would send athletes and a high-level delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next month.

The discussions were the first officially between the nations in more than two years amid high tensions over the North's nuclear weapons program.

South Korea had raised the issue of the North's nuclear weapons, which was quickly beaten back by Ri's statement.

At the White House, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Pyongyang's participation in the Olympics provided "an opportunity for the regime to see the value of ending international isolation by denuclearizing.

"We hope that we can continue to move forward on that front," she told reporters at the daily briefing, "but it certainly doesn't affect our participation."
