Ambassador Nikki Haley on Thursday said she does not want to become secretary of state when asked outright if she wanted the top diplomatic job currently held by Rex Tillerson, multiple outlets reported.

"No, I do not," Haley replied to the question during a press conference on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

The exchange comes amid reported tension between Haley and Tillerson over the country's position on the Iranian nuclear deal; Tillerson is urging President Donald Trump to keep the U.S. in it, while Haley is pressing the president's stated agenda of getting out of it.

Rumors previously have swirled that Tillerson is falling out of favor with Trump.

"There is going to be chatter about things," Haley said. "Ever since I was a legislator, people have talked about what I'm trying to do or what I'm supposed to do. What I'm trying to do is do a good job. And I'm trying to be responsible in my job. I'm trying to inform the American people on everything I know."

Haley was a candidate for secretary of state and met with Trump about the post before ultimately withdrawing from consideration.

Tillerson on Friday shut down the rumors, too.

"I think we have a Secretary of State currently, and I think he's planning to hang around," Tillerson said on ABC's "Good Morning America" program.
