Grand jury subpoenas have been issued to Michael Flynn’s business associates as federal prosecutors search for possible wrongdoing into how Flynn, the former national security adviser, handled disclosures about payments from clients to foreign governments including Russia and Turkey, CNN reports.
The news comes hours after President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey and amid an ongoing probe of Russian meddling in last year’s election.
Flynn lost his job in February after he lied about the nature of phone discussions with Russia’s ambassador regarding forthcoming sanctions on Russia by U.S. under then-President Barack Obama.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Virginia issued subpoenas to people who worked with Flynn after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014. Flynn’s attorney declined to comment on the matter as did the Justice Department and the FBI, CNN reports.
Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates on Monday told Congress she warned that National Security Adviser Michael Flynn "essentially could be blackmailed" because he apparently had lied to his bosses about his contacts with the Russian ambassador.
