Rep. Gohmert: Obama in Texas to Raise Money, Not Solve Border Crisis

Monday, 07 July 2014 04:37 PM EDT

President Barack Obama's refusal to visit the U.S.-Mexico border during a fundraising trip to Texas proves he's more interested in squeezing money out of the Lone Star state than solving the immigration crisis, Rep. Louie Gohmert tells Newsmax TV.

"This president has never stopping campaigning…. He's still campaigning and so he's in Texas to suck out as much money as he can,'' Gohmert said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show.''

"It wouldn't hurt his feelings if Texas got overwhelmed and had to quit bragging about all the jobs that are being created here. That's about the only thing he cares about in Texas, is the money he can suck out.''

His comments come after Obama declined Texas Gov. Rick Perry's invitation to visit areas where countless numbers of illegal immigrants — especially children — have been crossing the border.

Gohmert — who is vice chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations — added that Obama's request for $2 billion in aid to ease the crisis is unnecessary.

"The truth is we shouldn't have to be asking for $2 billion. They need to enforce the law as it is…. We've got to make sure the president will enforce the border as it is,'' Gohmert said.

"I'll spend $2 billion to enforce the border and send people back…. but I don't think we can start this unstoppable flow of money to take care of people coming in illegally that this administration has shown it is not going to stop. It is going to bankrupt the nation if they don't stop.''

Gohmert believes the Obama administration must emphatically state that all illegal immigrants who cross over the border will be sent back without question.

"The fact is if he just said it, it would stem some of the tide of the tens or hundreds, as we're finding out now, hundreds of thousands that are coming. But they won't even say it,'' he said.

"That's what the law requires and it would be a whole lot cheaper to put some border patrolmen with a group and send them back … then it would be to keep taking on this massive influx

"Our schools cannot handle this influx. We don't even know what all diseases they have. Our healthcare systems can't withstand this influx.''

Gohmert believes Obama's ideology is about one thing: winning at all costs.

"He doesn't care what has to be said. He doesn't care who gets hurt. He doesn't care what promises get broken,'' he said.

"You make whatever promises you've got to, but in the end they have said they want to turn Texas blue, they want to turn America blue.

"And if you bring in hundreds of thousands or millions of people and give them the ability to vote and tell them … [if] you want to keep getting the benefits, you have to go vote … that drives people to vote and it will ensure that Republicans don't ever get elected again.''
