House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa has subpoenaed Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber for all documents and communications relating to his work on the healthcare law.
"As one of the architects of Obamacare, Jonathan Gruber is in a unique position to shed light on the ‘lack of transparency’ surrounding the passage of the president’s healthcare law, however he has so far been unwilling to fully comply with the oversight committee’s repeated requests" the California Republican said.
"This week, Dr. Gruber repeatedly refused to answer several key questions, including the amount of taxpayer funds he received for his work on Obamacare," Issa said. "The American people deserve not just an apology, but a full accounting, which Dr. Gruber must provide."
In testimony before the panel on Tuesday, Gruber, an MIT economics professor, apologized for
"glib, thoughtless and sometimes downright insulting comments" about whether Americans understood Obamacare.
Excerpts of Gruber's comments on "the stupidity of the American voter" exploded on the Internet last month — and he has come under strong attack by Republicans and some Democrats for his remarks.
The federal government paid Gruber nearly $400,000 for his work on Obamacare. He has advised several states on healthcare issues, Massachusetts and its program under former Gov. Mitt Romney. Last month, Gruber lost a $450,000 consulting contract with Vermont.
Under questioning by Issa and other oversight panel members, Gruber could not say specifically how much money he was paid by the Obama administration for his services on the Affordable Care Act.
In addition, Marilyn Tavenner, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, testified about the inflated Obamacare enrollment numbers reported in September and last month.
Tavenner had said that 7.3 million Americans had signed up through the insurance exchanges that offered subsidized coverage. Her agency, however, had over-counted by about 400,000 people.
The corrected enrollment number for 2014 is 6.7 million.
