Indians Mock Obama's Gum Chewing at National Parade

Monday, 26 January 2015 01:08 PM

President Barack Obama has a bad habit that is being denounced as very unpresidential — chewing gum at public functions.

The U.S. leader was criticized by the media in India after he was caught chomping on gum during the country’s Republican Day Parade on Monday, with The Times of India going as far to say it was "an ungainly sight."

The newspaper, in fact, posted a video of Obama removing his chewing gum while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen talking to him.

There was also an adverse reaction to his gum-smacking on India’s social media, the Times reported.

Author Shobhaa De tweeted, "Barack working his jaws overtime and chewing gum! At least it isn't gutka. But seriously — gum during a formal parade?"

But noted Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur came to his defense, tweeting, "Glad to see Obama is so human. Like most Americans, he chews gum. Anyone know what brand?"

Obama, who reportedly chews gum as part of his efforts to kick cigarettes, has been criticized for the habit before. He drew the ire of the Chinese on social media during the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in Beijing.

He was also spotted with a wad of gum in his mouth during a ceremony in France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and even during his inauguration in 2013, the website noted, according to Politico.
