Hillary Clinton's diminishing poll numbers and the investigation into her use of a private email server while secretary of state could pose an uphill challenge in the important New Hampshire presidential primary, according to Business Insider.

A new Boston Herald/Franklin Pierce University poll shows socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders leading Clinton by 7 points — 44 to 37 — in the Granite State and just 35 percent of New Hampshire Democratic voters reported being "excited" about Clinton's campaign.

In March, Sanders trailed Clinton 44-8 in the same poll.

The most recent results do not bode well for the Democrats, Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at the Potomac Research Group, told Business Insider.

"Clinton is in free fall, and leaders of the party agree that Sanders would lose at least 49 states in the general election," he said. "So the speculation will intensify — starting today — that Joe Biden may have to save the party from a debacle."

Biden is reportedly in the midst of making a decision about whether to enter the race. The poll found that 46 percent of New Hampshire Democrats want the vice president to get in the race and 42 percent want him to stay out. His favorability ratings have gone up 14 percent since March.

"The poll grabbed the attention of many political analysts as a fresh sign of Clinton's potential weaknesses as a candidate," Business Insider reports.

Clinton is still dominating in national polls, according to Real Clear Politics, which shows her averaging a 35.6 percent advantage over the other Democrats.
