An avid pro-gun advocate and Florida state senator is giving away an AR-15 assault rifle as part of his GOP congressional campaign.

State Sen. Greg Evers calls the gun raffle a "Homeland Defender Giveaway" in a news release that comes a little more than a week after an assault rifle-toting gunman claiming allegiance to ISIS opened fire and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub.

"With terrorism incidents on the rise, both at home and abroad, protecting our constitutional rights has never been more important," Evers, who's running for the 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Jeff Miller, said in a news release announcing the controversial raffle.

"With all that’s happening in the world today, I’ve never felt stronger about the importance of the second amendment in protecting our homeland than I do now."

The raffle is available only to those 18 years or older who are residents of the district and can pass a federal criminal background check; the July 4 winner will be chosen at random from a list of all who have "liked" the "Greg Evers for Congress" Facebook page and "shared" a post from the page, according to the news release.

"The rifle proudly displays the 2nd amendment on the right side of the receiver," the news release points out.

Evers has earned an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association for 14 years, Politico reports.
