Sen. Ted Cruz late Saturday demanded that the Justice Department investigate the Charlottesville car-ramming attack that killed one person and injured 19 others, slamming it as a "grotesque act of domestic terrorism."

"It's tragic and heartbreaking to see hatred and racism once again mar our great nation with bloodshed," the Texas Republican said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"The First Amendment protects the rights of all Americans to speak their minds peaceably, but violence, brutality, and murder have no place in a civilized society.

"The Nazis, the KKK and white supremacists are repulsive and evil," he said. "All of us have a moral obligation to speak out against the lies, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred that they propagate.

"Having watched the horrifying video of the car deliberately crashing into a crowd of protesters, I urge the Department of Justice to immediately investigate and prosecute this grotesque act of domestic terrorism."

Charlottesville Police arrested James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, in the attack.

He allegedly drove the car and faces possible charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, failure to stop for an accident involving a death, and hit and run.

Fields is being held without bail at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

A 32-year-old woman was killed in the attack, police said. She was not immediately identified.

"These bigots want to tear our country apart, but they will fail," Cruz said. "America is far better than this.

"Our nation was built on fundamental truths, none more central than the proposition 'that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'"

In addition, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said that he hoped that Fields is "prosecuted as a domestic terrorist."

"I don't care what his philosophy is," the former 2016 Republican presidential candidate told Jeanine Pirro on Fox News. "I hope he's prosecuted as a domestic terrorist.

"Because that's what he is. I'm not hesitant to call him that. He's a terrorist.

"What he did was vile," Huckabee continued. "He attempted murder — and he murdered a person.

"This was not just a vehicular homicide. This was intentional murder.

"I'm glad he's in custody," he said, "and I hope he's prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
