GOP Sets Fundraising Records as Midterm Momentum Builds

By    |   Tuesday, 07 Oct 2014 11:43 AM

Republican donors — buoyed by recent polling and expert prognosticating that suggests 2014 midterms are beginning to shift in their favor — are pouring a record amount of cash into Senate races in the home stretch, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The late-term infusion is significant, marking $15.5 million last month alone, a figure double what was raised by the National Republican Senatorial Committee in August, when $6 million hit GOP coffers, the Journal noted.

"Momentum is on our side heading into November," U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, the NRSC's finance chairman, told the Journal. "Our record fundraising month is an example of the enthusiasm we're seeing."

Democrats, who've yet to release their September figures, but who have beaten out their political counterparts all year in the fundraising game, cannot bemoan the latest GOP fundraising as fat-cat donors laying it on heavy during the midterm election cycle's last weeks. A majority of the recent donations to Republicans have been small, signaling grass-roots interest in the party taking over the Senate after years of gridlock in Washington, the Journal reported.

Such fundraising increases are being charted not only to the national party but also to individual races, the Journal noted of the targeted contributions. One example is Colorado, where Republican Rep. Cory Gardner is going after incumbent Sen. Mark Udall in a hard-fought battle, dubbed a toss-up by Real Clear Politics. In that race, Gardner brought in $4.4 million for the latest quarter, ending Sept. 30, a figure that more than doubled his latest quarter haul, according to the Journal.

All told, the NRSC has brought in more than $97 million for the 2014 midterm cycle, its highest figure ever, The Hill noted. Republicans said they feel well-positioned as Nov. 4 looms and a Senate takeover seems increasingly likely.

"Over the last 20 months, we've revamped NRSC's direct-mail technologies and invested heavily in building a more robust digital operation that has successfully tapped in to the grass-roots energy and enthusiasm that's out there to shake up the Senate," noted NRSC Chairman Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican, in a statement reported by The Hill.

"This class of Republican candidates is one of the strongest in decades and these resources will help lead them to victory in November," Moran said. "We cannot thank our supporters enough, each of whom is a partner in the effort to win the Senate."
