Rep. Peter King told CNN on Wednesday he has no evidence there are terrorist sleeper cells in the United States, but the safe move is to assume that there are.
King, a New York Republican, is a member of House Homeland Security Committee and appeared on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."
"I have no evidence that there's actual cells," he said. "There's no doubt there's supporters over here. There's no doubt there's sympathizers here."
Whether the individuals are associated with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) or the Islamic State (ISIS), it is well known that Americans have gone to Syria for training and returned to the United States.
"We don't know what we don't know," he said. "We have to assume that there are sleeper cells here or there could be sleeper cells here and act on that presumption."
