The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says federal authorities have "disrupted" a security threat to Pope Francis' upcoming visit to the United States.

"The pope is a very … passionate man. He likes to get out with the people and with that comes a large security risk," Rep. Mike McCaul said on ABC's "This Week."

"We are monitoring very closely threats against the pope as he comes into the United States.

"We have disrupted one particular case in particular," he added. "But as that date approaches, I think we’re all very, being very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the United States."

McCaul also warned Sunday that bringing Syrian refugees into the country might not be a good idea.

"I take ISIS at its word, when they said, in their words, we'll use and exploit the refugee crisis to infiltrate the West, that concerns me," McCaul said.

President Barack Obama has ordered that at least 10,000 refugees be brought into the country. European nations, including Germany, are welcoming them in as well.

But many fear terrorists are embedding themselves with the throngs of families leaving the war-torn country.

McCaul said he has had the FBI, Homeland Security officials and the intelligence community testify before his committee that they don't have all the systems in place to screen refugees.

"First and foremost, my job is to protect the American people," McCaul said. "We're a compassionate nation," he said, but added, "This could be a very reckless and dangerous policy."
