Lindsey Graham: Obama Has 'No Stick' in Dealing With Russia

By    |   Monday, 21 July 2014 03:04 PM EDT

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham slammed President Barack Obama's handling of foreign affairs, saying he "has no situational awareness regarding the adversaries he faces."

Graham took to Twitter soon after Obama spoke from the White House on Monday morning to provide an update of events in Ukraine and the Middle East.

"President Obama continues to pursue diplomatic solutions while Russia and their separatist allies continue to dismember the Ukraine," he tweeted. "The people who appreciated President Obama's speech the most were the Russians. Talks loud. No stick."

During his Monday remarks, Obama said his preference "continues to be finding a diplomatic resolution" to the crisis in Ukraine.

"I believe that can still happen. That is my preference today, and it will continue to be my preference," he said.

Concerning the U.S. response to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, Obama insisted that "our immediate focus is on recovering those who were lost, investigating exactly what happened, and putting forward the facts. We have to make sure that the truth is out, and that accountability exists."

The harsh words targeted at Obama were a continuation of Graham's sharp tone during a Sunday appearance on NBC News' "Meet the Press."

Graham characterized Obama as the "king of indecision" whose "policies are failing across the globe."

Specifically, Graham lambasted the administration for not responding to calls to arm Ukraine, and suggested that U.S.-European "organized" sanctions targeting Putin as an individual should be considered.

He was equally critical of Secretary of State John Kerry, who has defended the administration against assertions that it is disengaged from global affairs.

Graham said Kerry had given a "ridiculous and delusional summary of American foreign policy ... It scares me that he thinks the world is in such good shape."

Kerry, who was interviewed earlier by "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory, said, "The facts could not be more clear. The United States of America has never been more engaged in helping to lead in more places than we are now."
