Canada may introduce gender-neutral identification cards or begin placing that designation on passports.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told CP24 the government was exploring the "best way" to move Canada forward with gender issues.

"That's part of the great arc of history sweeping towards justice," Trudeau said.

On Sunday, the socially-liberal leader became the first Canadian prime minister to march in a gay pride parade.

Andrée-Lyne Hallé, a spokesperson for the prime minister, told CBC News:

"We are conducting a review of all the circumstances in which the government requires or produces identity documents in order not to exclude people whose gender identity does not match the binary standard. This could include neutrality in several situations."

Last week, officials in the Canadian province of Ontario, which has a population of 13.6 million, said in addition to using the letters "M" and "F" for male and female on drivers licenses, it will also permit the term "X," to indicate a third gender.

Such countries as Australia, New Zealand and Nepal have already adopted the "X" indicator on identification cards.
