Author Jonah Goldberg: Liberals Lie About Ideological Perspective

By    |   Saturday, 05 May 2012 09:44 PM EDT

Liberals from Woodrow Wilson to Barack Obama have been lying about their ideological agenda for generations and it’s all “a big con,” author and editor Jonah Goldberg tells Newsmax.TV.

Goldberg explores this idea in his new book, “The Tyranny of Clichés: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas.” He said that for most of the 20th century liberals, “certainly from Woodrow Wilson and FDR to Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, have insisted that they’re not ideological; that they don’t have some grand agenda; that they just care about what works; they’re pragmatists and empiricists; and they don’t care about all these ideological things and it’s just a bunch of nonsense.

“Of course they have an ideological perspective. There’s nothing wrong with having an ideological perspective. They just simply lie about it.”

The founding editor of The National Review online and fellow at the American Enterprise Institute said that despite assurances in his inaugural address, President Barack Obama does care about ideology.

See exclusive video below.

“His administration was built from the beginning about a transformational, liberal agenda and the lie is simply that he doesn’t have the agenda,” he said. “He campaigned on green energy and his education program and on socialized medicine, and then we have a huge financial crisis and what a huge coincidence, it turns out that socialized medicine, green energy and all the rest are exactly those things we need to fix the economy. It’s just nonsense.

“Europe had all of these programs that Obama says America desperately needs to get back on track. Europe is in a worse position than we are today and socialized medicine didn’t help them fight off a financial crisis. It’s all a big con, a Trojan horse that allows them to pretend they don’t have ideology when they’re really pushing one.”

Goldberg said that liberals are not more open about their ideology because they know that it is unpopular in America, adding that it sells their own voters short and is an “incredibly condescending way to go through life.” He said the worst cliché and lie of Obama administration is that he has “no ideological agenda.

“This is just something that he constantly lies about,” Goldberg said. “He says we only care about doing the hard work that the American people sent us here to do ... when, in fact, he’s pushing a pretty radical agenda.

“The one that actually offended me the most was in his last State of the Union address where he picked into this moral equivalent of war argument ... this idea that if the country just dropped all the petty associations and personal ambitions, if we got rid of that whole individual pursuit of happiness thing, and instead rallied around the government the way we do when we’re at war everything would be so much better.”

Goldberg noted that in his State of the Union address, Obama said there were no Republicans or Democrats on the SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden and suggested that would be a great way to run the country.

“That is a fundamentally undemocratic way to think about the nature of our society,” he said. “Particularly when you are talking about such small agenda items that Barack Obama is trying to peddle off as some grand thing. We all just shut up and agreed to put the bill on more windmills so we are a more patriotic and wonderful and unified country. It is a way to short-circuit the debate and basically invoke other people’s patriotism in a cause that doesn’t require it in order to shut down the debate and win without actually having had an argument.”
