Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer for former President George W. Bush, walked back a tweet claiming that Donald Trump Jr. had engaged in "treason" by meeting with a Russia lawyer.

On CNN, Painter admitted the treason charge depended on whether Donald Trump, Jr., knew he was going to a meeting with someone from Russia and if he was seeking information obtained through espionage about Clinton.

He acknowledged there could be numerous explanations for why the meeting took place.

Earlier Sunday Painter claimed that Trump, Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer in hopes of getting information on Hillary Clinton was "treason."

"This is treason. He must have known that the only way Russia would get such information was by spying," Painter tweeted Sunday.

The New York Times on Sunday reported President Donald Trump's son agreed to meet with a lawyer linked to the Kremlin during the 2016 U.S. presidential election after being promised damaging information on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton," Donald Trump Jr. said, according to the Times.

"Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information," Donald Trump, Jr., said, the Times reported.

The president was "not aware of and did not attend" the meeting, Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team, said in an emailed statement.

Meeting with foreign nationals who claim to have negative information on a public candidate for office does not violate any federal law.
