Germany’s foreign minister said Saturday the recent fissure between Qatar and other Arab nations could lead to war, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reports.
"There is a danger that this conflict might become a war," said Sigmar Gabriel, who called the severity of the dealings "dramatic."
Saudia Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on June 5 cut diplomatic, trade and transport ties with Qatar and suspended Doha-bound flights after accusing Doha of supporting terrorists, a charge Qatar denies.
Jordan and Djibouti also downgraded diplomatic relations with Qatar.
With backing from President Donald Trump, the Arab nations accuse Qatar of supporting their regional arch-rival Iran as well as Islamist militants. Trump on Friday lauded Saudi Arabia's efforts while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urged Riyadh and its allies to resolve the blockade.
Gabriel said Germany will make efforts to promote dialogue among the parties involved.
"Along with our American colleagues, but above all our colleagues in the region, we must try to find solutions, especially lifting the sea and air blockades," Gabriel told reporters in Germany, as quoted by Reuters.
