Bachmann: Obamacare a ‘Crime Against Democracy’

By    |   Sunday, 06 March 2011 01:46 PM

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., says Obamacare is a “crime against democracy” and the president’s offer to states to implement their own healthcare reforms to replace it is nothing more than a “pretext.”

Bachmann's comments came on the heels of her exclusive Newsmax michele, bachmann, obama, health, careinterview, in which she revealed that the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress “deceitfully” hid a $105 billion appropriation in the federal healthcare reform legislation.

“That’s not a give at all. In effect all that is, is a pretext for implementing a single-payer plan,” Bachmann said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “If you recall the president’s entire statement, he said: The states can opt out as long as they stay with the requirements of all of Obamacare.

“Again, from the very beginning it has been said that Obamacare is a crime against democracy. It has been a deception from the beginning,” she said. “Remember, the president told us it was a mandate, not a tax – now in the federal court he’s arguing it is a tax, not a mandate. We were also told our premiums would go down $2,500 and instead they’re spiking up 20 and 40 percent. This has been a fraud.”

Gregory asked whether Bachmann was willing to see the government shut down over decisive issues such as de-funding Obamacare, and funding for Planned Parenthood and the Environmental Protection Agency. Bachmann returned to the appropriation deception of $105 billion in Obamacare, which she first exclusively revealed to Newsmax.

“I think this deception, that the president and [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid put forward with appropriating over $105 billion, needs to be given back to the people,” she said. There was no debate, there was no discussion – $105 billion is a lot of money – you can’t just slip that into a bill and not tell members of the House and not tell members of the Senate.

“When they go vote for the bill: Did it just slip Harry Reid’s mind?”

Gregory again pressed Bachmann on whether she would vote to shut down the government over the riders. Bachmann would not relent.

“I think President [Barack] Obama needs to give back that $105 billion that they already appropriated. They have tied the hands of Congress for the next eight years, David, they already appropriated this money – members of Congress didn’t even know this money was in the bill, because we couldn’t read the bill before it was passed, because it wasn’t given to us but hours before we had to vote for it.”

Turning to foreign policy, Gregory asked whether it is in America’s vital interest to remove Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

“As Defense Secretary [Robert] Gates has said: We need to be very careful about putting an army on the ground in the Middle East,” Bachmann said. “We are extended now in Afghanistan and Iraq and I think for us to consider further penetration at this time – we need to listen to Gen. [David] Petraeus and what he has to say.”

Gregory then asked Bachmann about her plans for 2012, and claims she is an extremist and is far more interested in fueling anger than becoming a consensus politician who can attract widespread support.

“I haven’t made a decision either way about plans for 2012,” Bachmann replied. “What my concern is, is that our country move forward, and that we regain a sound financial footing.

“I don’t believe that Barack Obama has done a good job as president of the United States,” she added. “I think that’s [been shown] statistically on everything from anemic job creation, to the out of control spending and deficit. The economy is simply not improving.”
