Perhaps President Obama and potential Republican presidential candidate Sarah Palin aren’t so far apart after all. Ancestry.com, the world’s biggest family history web site, says the two are 10th cousins, Politico reports
To be sure, we’re all related in some distant fashion, but it’s still an interesting fact, assuming it’s true.
Obama and Palin are related through an ancestor named John Smith, who settled in Massachusetts in the mid-17th century, Ancestry.com says.
It also says Obama is 10th cousins once removed with radio talk show star Rush Limbaugh and 11th cousins with former President George W. Bush.
Bush and Palin are 11th cousins themselves. So maybe the real lesson is we’re all about 10th cousins with our fellow Americans.
“If you think about it, the president and Sarah Palin share an ancestor in the mid-1600s. That’s not that long ago. Sure, a number of people with American roots will also share this ancestor, but not everybody,” says Anastasia Tyler, a genealogist with Ancestry.com.
