Lieberman: Ban on Islamic Terrorism Terms 'Offensive'

Sunday, 11 April 2010 11:18 AM EDT

Sen. Joe Lieberman says the Obama administration's decision to remove terms like "Islamic radicalism" and "Islamic extremism" from the official U.S. National Security Strategy is offensive and dishonest.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Lieberman said changing the document's wording was an affront to the many millions of Muslims who are not terrorists.

"This is not honest and, frankly, I think it's hurtful in our relations with the Muslim world," the Connecticut independent said, according to FoxNews.com. "We're not in a war against Islam. It's a group of Islamist extremists who have taken the Muslim religion and made it into a political ideology, and I think if we're not clear about that, we disrespect the overwhelming majority of Muslims who are not extremists."

Lieberman said he had written a letter to President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, calling on the administration to "identify accurately the ideological source" of the threats facing America, rather than tiptoe around the subject with word changes in official documents.
