GOP Sen. Inhofe: Holder Must Resign Over Fast and Furious

By    |   Thursday, 01 December 2011 11:47 AM EST

Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe is demanding that Attorney General Eric Holder resign over Operation Fast and Furious, insisting that Holder must have been aware of the controversial federal gunrunning sting that backfired in deadly fashion.

“You can’t tell me that if his deputy attorney general, his deputy chief of staff, his assistant attorney general — that they were all aware of this and that he was not,” Inhofe said during an interview with the Daily Caller on Wednesday. “Something as high-profile as this operation, he would’ve known about it, and so he’d have to be lying.”

Inhofe is the second Republican senator this week to call for Holder to resign over Fast and Furious, part of a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms program that allowed more than 2,000 guns to be bought in the United States and trafficked into Mexico with the hope of catching cartel leaders.

The program was halted in 2010 when one of the guns was used to kill U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Another gun was used to kill immigration officer Jaime Zapata, and additional weapons have been used in several other crimes.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, a Republican from Georgia, also called for Holder’s resignation this week, joining 52 House members and three Republican presidential candidates.

Fast and Furious has sparked such outrage that Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, are heading up congressional investigations into the fiasco. Holder and others are covering up the truth about the operation, they contend.
