You may be making unhealthy choices every day without even realizing it. Certain habits are obviously bad for your health, like smoking and eating too much junk food, but there are dozens of other things you may be doing on a daily basis that can be just as damaging — you just don't realize it.

Best Life set out to determine what other activities and lifestyle factors could be harming your body. Based on the report, we look at six things you probably didn't know were bad for your health:

  1. Sitting up too straight. Since the first day of school we were told not to slouch, but it turns out sitting up too straight for long periods of time can also strain your back. "If you work in an office setting, make sure your chair is at a height where your knees are at a 90-degree angle, your feet can rest flat on the floor, and you have proper lower back support," recommended  Dr. Neel Anand, MD, the director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles.
  2. Running on pavement. Running is good for your health but continuously doing so on hard surfaces such as pavement can be hard on your joints and spine. Anand suggested switching up your running routes to include trails or even grass in the park. Softer surfaces are less jarring on the spine and will help build stronger legs.
  3. Burning incense. The gentle smell of burning incense wafting in the room may be soothing for your mind, but it is not so gentle on your lungs and can actually be bad for your health. Research has linked incense to an increased risk of respiratory tract carcinomas.
  4. Dry cleaning your clothing. It is convenient to take your clothes down to the dry cleaner rather than wash it yourself, but doing so comes with added health risks. Dry cleaning involves the chemical perchloroethylene, which can lead to cancer over time. It is also linked to mood swings, delayed reaction time, and even changes in vision.
  5. Over-the-counter sleeping pills. A lack of sleep over an extended period of time may be bad for your health, but popping over the counter sleeping pills on a regular basis may be worse. Many of these pills contain diphenhydramine, which has been linked to dementia and can hurt your memory, said Dr. Amarish Davé, DO, a board-certified neurologist. If you are struggling to sleep properly, it's better to consult a physician.
  6. Texting. Most of us are guilty of this unhealthy habit. Texting can cause overuse injury to your thumb, and hunching over your phone can strain your neck and back, according to Dr. Roberto Contreras II, MD, an internist in San Bernardino, California.
