Acetaminophen: Unsafe for Kidneys

Acetaminophen is widely advertised as a “safe” medication for pain and fever reduction. But it is one of the most harmful and dangerous pharmaceutical compounds sold without a prescription.

In fact, Tylenol — which contains acetaminophen — is one of the main sources of liver damage severe enough to require liver transplantation, even when it’s used in recommended doses.

One of the chief harmful effects of acetaminophen is that it drastically lowers cellular glutathione — one of the cell’s main protectant molecules — along with other essential antioxidant compounds.

Acetaminophen is especially dangerous when used by infants, small children, and the elderly.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine protects against the loss of glutathione caused by acetaminophen.

A recent study found that both curcumin and quercetin could also protect against acetaminophen damage to the brain, liver, kidneys, heart, and lungs, and counteract its toxic effects on blood-forming organs.

In this study, researchers found that acetaminophen drastically lowered essential protective cell compounds, including:

• Glutathione

• Superoxide dismutase (SOD)

• Glutathione S-transferase

• Glutathione peroxidase

• Catalase

The toxic effects of acetaminophen were better neutralized by curcumin than by quercetin. When used with acetaminophen, curcumin fully protected the liver, kidneys, and other organs, and normalized the function of the organs.

Other studies have confirmed the powerful protective effect of curcumin against acetaminophen toxicity.

While a good deal of the toxicity of acetaminophen is caused by a lowering of antioxidant defenses, it has also been shown that the medication induces severe inflammation and death of critical kidney components, such as renal tubular cells.

Importantly, it has been shown that the flavonoid hesperidin can prevent this damage in both the liver and the kidneys.

Grape seed extract also protects the kidneys against acetaminophen damage.

Taking curcumin, hesperidin, and grape seed extract in combination would most likely afford better protection than any one of them alone.
