10 Symptoms of Underactive Thyroid

By    |   Wednesday, 10 June 2015 11:03 AM EDT

Hypothyroidism is the term used when a thyroid is underactive. The gland doesn’t produce the hormones necessary to assist cells and tissues throughout the body.

An underactive thyroid could result from an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s disease, in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Doctors may treat the condition with hormone medication, according to Hormone Health Network.

Here are symptoms to watch for that may involve an underactive thyroid:

1. Fatigue is a common symptom for people with an underactive thyroid, especially if they still feel tired or exhausted after a full night’s sleep. The thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones to signal the muscles to function properly.

2. Weight gain for no apparent reason often has the underlying cause of hypothyroidism. Patients may complain that they are eating right and exercising more, but are still gaining weight.

3. Depression might occur when diminished thyroid hormones reduce the production of brain chemicals, including serotonin, which is responsible for boosting mood.

4. Brain fog or fuzziness can case forgetfulness because of hypothyroidism. People experience mental improvement with treatment for an underactive thyroid, integrative medicine specialist Dr. Robin Miller told Health.com.

5. Constipation is another common complaint for people with an underactive thyroid. The gland’s inability to produce enough hormones slows down the digestive process.

6. Dry skin and hair occur when metabolism slows down. A lack of hormones delivered from the thyroid gland results in a reduction of moisture for the skin, which also can become itchy and flaky. Nails may become brittle and develop ridges due to a change in skin texture.

7. Menstrual irregularities could include longer menstrual periods or periods that come closer together, heavier flow, and an increase in cramps because of hypothyroidism.

8. Loss of interest in sex could result from several consequences of hypothyroidism. An underactive thyroid causes low energy and body aches and pains that contribute to a low libido.

9. Tingling, numbness, or pain in the extremities or muscles are often the result of an underactive thyroid. The gland can’t produce enough hormones to help the nerves send signals to the brain.

10. High blood pressure stems from both an underactive and overactive thyroid. Low levels of hormones may slow the heartbeat, which doesn’t pump enough blood. People with hypothyroidism have up to three times the risk of developing high blood pressure.
