How to Manage Heartburn in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) With Natural Remedies

Monday, 06 January 2014 01:16 AM EST

Many people experience heartburn after a spicy or heavy meal. Heartburn is a very common digestive disorder caused by stomach acid reflux into the food pipe. The stomach contains digestive enzymes and acid that are functioning to digest the food. Normally this acid does not enter into the esophagus due to a tight sphincter (valve) at the lower end of the esophagus, but sometimes this sphincter does not close properly causing acid reflux.
This acid reflux causes heartburn, burning in the center of the chest. Chronic heartburn is medically known as gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), which can be caused by a faulty lifestyle and junk diet.

Acid reflux is normally characterized by heartburn, nausea, and sour eructation. Stress precipitates the heartburn as more acid reflux is seen when under stress. GERD is very common in pregnant ladies as the changing hormone levels make the sphincter weak and the growing size of the fetus in the abdomen puts back extra pressure.

Many people consume antacid for heartburn or acid reflux problem. Consuming chemical-based medicines for managing GERD is not a healthy solution. Natural cures are far better, safe, and effective in managing acid reflux. Various natural cures for acid reflux are available.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a natural cure for heartburn. It can reduce the inflammation and help in healing the ulcerated mucous membrane. This is a natural remedy for managing GERD which also prevents long-term side effects of GERD like esophageal stricture.

Coriander is another natural remedy for acid reflux cure. It is a natural soothing antacid and healing for the mucous membrane. Coriander tea or expressed juice is a healthy option for acid reflux cure.

Milk thistle has been reputed as a promising natural cure for inflammation caused due to acid reflux. It is available in tablet dosage form in the market.

Aloe vera is a fantastic natural remedy for heartburn. It is a mild laxative as well and is available in juice and gel forms for drinking.

Drinking unboiled milk is also a natural and effective method for GERD as it buffers the acid.

Another household remedy is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). It can relieve the heartburn in few seconds by neutralizing the acids. One-fourth to a half-teaspoon of baking soda with water will give desired results.

So it is advisable that heartburn cure should be done with natural remedy.
