Avoiding a late dinner, late night snack, and an early breakfast could help breast cancer patients decrease the risk of their cancer returning.

Numerous studies have found that fasting for short periods can lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cancer because fasting allows your body to concentrate on repairing DNA. But researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that fasting can also keep breast cancer from recurring.

Researchers followed women with early breast cancer for more than seven years, recording those who had a recurrence of their disease and deaths from breast cancer or any other cause.

They found that those who went less than 13 hours without food increased the risk of their cancer recurring by 39 percent and their risk of dying by 21 percent.

Researchers also reported that fasting fewer hours per night was associated with less sleep and higher blood sugar levels, both of which have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.

"Increasing the duration of overnight fasting could be a novel strategy to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer," said researcher Catherine Marinac.

"This is a simple dietary change that we believe most women can understand and adopt," she said. "It may have a big impact on public health without requiring complicated counting of calories or nutrients."

About 12 percent of American women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.

In 2016, 246,660 new cases of invasive cancer are projected to be diagnosed, along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. Over 40,000 American women die from the disease each year.
