If you think that steering clear of sugar in your diet by drinking diet sodas will help you avoid developing Type 2 diabetes, think again. A study from Sweden's Karolinska Institute found that drinking two small soft drinks a day, either sugary or diet, doubled the risk of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. More than 29 million Americans have the condition, and it's the seventh leading cause of death, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Type 2 diabetes is linked to lifestyle and obesity, and it changes the way the body responds to insulin, unlike Type 1 diabetes which is an autoimmune disease that destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.

In a year-long study, researchers examined the soft drink habits of 2,874 adults and compared them with rates of diabetes.

Those who drank two or more 200 ml (between 6 and 7 ounces) sweetened (naturally or artificially) drinks a day increased their risk of Type 2 diabetes by 2.4 times.

For those who guzzled at least five drinks a day (about a quart), the news was even worse: Their risk of diabetes increased by more than 10 times.

A serious soda habit also increased the risk of another disease called Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), which has characteristics of both types of diabetes.

“We were surprised by the increased risk in developing autoimmune diabetes by drinking soft drinks," said lead scientist Dr. Josefin Edwall Lofvenborg.

"We next plan on investigating what could counter this risk, such as eating fatty fish," he said.

The researchers speculated that soft drinks may influence insulin sensitivity and how the body metabolizes glucose.

The study was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology.

The numbers of people with Type 2 diabetes have almost quadrupled in the last three decades and are still rising.
